EARTHY CAR OF THE WEEK: 2009 Smart ForTwo

2009 smart fortwo Passion, White, Hatchback, 7857 mi, $13,500 http://ht.ly/3Sn0N 5-spd automatic, MPG = 33/41

If you combined a Mercedes and Toyota Prius, and cut it in half, you would then have a Smart ForTwo.

The Smart is manufactured by Daimler-Benz AG, who also makes Mercedes-Benz. Like a Mercedes, it uses the best parts, is stylish and built with a strong exterior, and has comfortable, leather seating. Like a Toyota Prius, it runs very light on gasoline and is friendly to the environment. However, unlike both, the Smart car is very small – it is only half the size of a typical Mercedes or Prius. As the name suggests, it fits only two people.

The Smart was founded by the CEO of the Swatch watch brand, who thought to bring the concept of Swatch to vehicles – small, personalized, and stylish('Smart' stands for Swatch Mercedes art).

The Smart ForTwo is the smallest vehicle sold in the United States. It is the only micro car, 'kei' car, or city car sold in the United States. In the U.S., it stands out on the roads and is considered a novelty. In Western Europe, the Smart car and other city cars are more common.

I drive a Smart ForTwo (it is the display picture on our Facebook profile) and personally love it. It attracts a lot of attention - people will ask me all sorts of questions about it, mainly about its fuel usage or safety. It is not an electric car as some people think, but it is the most fuel efficient fuel-powered vehicle. It has a 33/41 MPG rating (for comparison, the subcompact Honda Fit or Toyota Yaris has a 27-28/34-35 MPG). Some people think that because of its size, the Smart is an unsafe car to drive. That is untrue - see this blog entry. There is a hard cell built around the vehicle for protection. It is safer than many typical sedans.

If you desire something unique, that will save you fuel and/or help protect the environment, or that is easy to park, and you usually drive yourself or one other person between short distances, then the Smart ForTwo is the PERFECT vehicle.

“It is the smallest car curious Americans will likely ever get into, and the seeming vulnerability of its golf-cart dimensions, riding on little 15-inch donuts, may frighten off a lot of buyers. But it's very easy to get into and out of; it's not at all cramped inside-in fact, it has about the same legroom, and close to the headroom, of a Cadillac Escalade. The seats are exceptionally comfortable, the materials inside are first-rate, and the view out the windshield is panoramic. And the fortwo comes with an odd feeling when one notices that each of the doors runs almost the entire length of the car.” –Car and Driver

“The Smart Fortwo is the smallest car sold in the United States, [stretching] less than nine feet in overall length...We think it's best used as a city car. Its small size makes it easy to park and allows it to easily dart in and out of traffic. Designed to offer a low cost of ownership, it's meant to get drivers from A to B without frills. With fuel mileage of 33 mpg in the city and 41 mpg on the highway, the Smart car will appeal to commuters who make short trips by themselves. Its fuel economy numbers aren't as good as the Toyota Prius or Honda Civic Hybrid, but they're better than any other economy car.” –New Car Test Drive
