The days when the Impreza was an inexpensive subcompact, sold mainly on the strength of its low price, are long gone. The 2006 Impreza line offers more variants than ever, almost to the point of confusion.

There's a lot to like in the Impreza line, and a small car for nearly every taste. All models are good fun to drive and quite practical, with decent room in the back seat and good gas mileage. The standard fulltime all-wheel-drive system is legitimately a safety, performance and foul-weather advantage.”

“The 2006 Impreza is more sophisticated, perhaps more serious, but it's still fun and sensible in any guise. It's still loaded with character compared to some of the sanitized appliances that populate this class of car. One of our favorite small cars is better than ever.”

“Standard features include upscale bits like interior air filtration, auto-off headlights and an outside temperature indicator, as well as air conditioning, an 80-watt stereo with CD, cruise control and remote keyless locks. Yet there's plenty of room for passengers and cargo inside, and the compact exterior dimensions make them easier to park. They are designed to be extremely safe, with active and passive safety features to help drivers avoid accidents, then protect them if there is a crash. Both the sedan and wagon rank among the best looking Volvos ever, and inside they offer clean, Scandinavian elegance. For both appearance and ease of function, the interiors rank among best in class.”

FEATURES: “The S40 2.4i ($24,365) and V50 2.4i ($26,815) are powered by a 2.4-liter five-cylinder engine generating 168 horsepower and 170 pound-feet of torque. The S40 2.4i comes standard with a five-speed manual transmission… Standard equipment includes manual air conditioning with cabin filtration, power windows and door locks with remote locking, cruise control, a tilt-telescoping leather steering wheel with audio controls, 80-watt audio with six speakers and single CD, and 16-inch alloy wheels.”

DRIVING IMPRESSION: “We've driven all the S40 and V50 models, and found no glaring shortcomings in any of them. The base 2.4i is an excellent choice for drivers who want a safe small car with good driving dynamics and fuel economy.

The base S40 and V50 offer a nice balance of ride and handling. They're smooth, with enough power for most drivers.”

SUMMARY: “The Volvo S40 sedan and V50 wagon make excellent small cars. They offer essential active safety systems, such as advanced ABS and skid-control electronics, and a high level of impact protection. Their interiors are among the best in class. Fresh styling for 2008 doesn't change their essential character, and they still rank among the most handsome Volvos ever. In all, the S40 and V50 remain a good, high-value alternative to entry models from Audi, BMW, Lexus and Mercedes-Benz.”

INTRODUCTION: “Honda's CR-V was not designed to tackle tough terrain. Honda knows most sport-utilities rarely leave the pavement, let alone venture into real rough stuff. For most of us, a little extra ground clearance and four-wheel traction are enough to satisfy our SUV needs: running family errands, battling winter slush.

The Honda CR-V offers utility, car-like driveability and full-time four-wheel drive. These first two are attributes minivans are designed to address and the CR-V offers the usefulness of a minivan.”

FEATURES: “A 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine rated at 146 horsepower powers all models. CR-V LX models come standard with air conditioning, an AM/FM/cassette stereo, cruise control, map lights, a rear window washer-wiper, and power windows, mirrors and locks. To this, EX models add ABS, remote keyless entry, dual power color-keyed mirrors, CD stereo and alloy wheels.”

DRIVING: “Good ride quality is a CR-V strong suit. It's supple enough to absorb the nasty little irregularities of rough pavement without excessive compromise in handling response.

Overall, the CR-V drives like a compact station wagon, which is essentially what it is. There is nothing remotely truck-like about its behavior. Steering is precise and feeds plenty of road feel back to the driver.”

SUMMARY: “The Honda CR-V is an excellent piece of work. It's much roomier than the RAV4…it is loaded with nifty features and, for the kind of duties that most sport-utilities perform most of the time, its all-around practicality and comfort deserve high marks.”

INTRODUCTION: “Honda Civic is an icon. Honda sells more than 325,000 Civics a year in the U.S., making it one of America's best-selling compacts. Civics are notable for their excellent fuel economy and sporty handling. Front-seat comfort is superb by any measure.”

FEATURES: “Civic DX and LX are powered by a 1.7-liter four-cylinder engine rated 115 horsepower…LX adds air conditioning, 15-inch (rather than 14-inch) steel wheels, anti-roll bars front and rear, power-operated controls, a height-adjustable driver's seat, remote keyless entry, a CD player, and other luxury features.

Civic EX models get more power from a 127-horsepower VTEC version of the 1.7-liter engine. EX also gets 15-inch aluminum wheels, body-colored power mirrors, upgraded audio with six speakers, and a tilt-and-slide glass sunroof.

The Civic Hybrid represents the ultimate in environmental responsibility, using a small gas engine and a big electric motor to achieve up to 51 mpg. The Hybrid ($19,650) is equipped comparably to the EX sedan.”

SUMMARY: “You can't go wrong buying a Honda Civic, regardless of trim level. All are reliable, practical, and fuel efficient. Civics are fun to drive and all models offer excellent handling…Civics are available with anti-lock brakes and side-impact airbags. All models deliver high fuel economy figures.”
