EXPERT REVIEWS:
"Efficient, practical, affordable, polished and pleasant to drive, if not downright fun, with a reputation for reliability: These are the Honda Civic's hallmarks, and nothing about the 2005 model suggests anything has changed."

"Few carmakers offer the range or diversity Honda builds into the Civic line. There are sedans, coupes and a hatchback, with an emphasis on either features and convenience, performance or fuel efficiency and low cost of operation. All are notable for their excellent fuel economy, free-revving engines and solid handling…All provide superb comfort for front-seat passengers."

"Honda's reputation for space-efficient design holds in the Civic. This small car packs its motor into a condensed engine bay, leaving more space for passengers, especially in front, without increasing exterior dimensions. We like the Civic's expansive glass, compared to some small cars."

"Good seats, well-designed controls and excellent outward visibility make the Honda Civic an easy car to operate. The windows are expansive for a car this size and the hood is low, so the passenger compartment feels airy and open. Sight lines are excellent for driving and parking. From the front seat all Civics are comfortable cars; from the back seat, they are less so."

"Now in the latter part of its product cycle, the Honda Civic remains a class standard. You can't go wrong with a Civic regardless of trim level, and there are a broad range of choices to suit budgets, needs or tastes. All are practical, fuel efficient and fun to drive. Other small cars might beat the Civic in a particular area or category of performance, but few match its overall balance of strengths."

EARTHY CAR OF THE WEEK: 2005 Chevy Aveo

2005 Chevrolet Aveo LS, Hatchback, Silver, 107219 mi, $4,900 http://ht.ly/5xkEl Subcompact, 5-spd automatic, MPG = 23/32

If you desire a car with basic features and nothing more, low-priced but reliable and not too old, then this Chevy Aveo is perfect for you.

At only $4,900, this Chevy Aveo the lowest priced car on our lot. It is just 6 years old and well maintained. Although it is a “basic” car, it comes with decent features (see below).

The Aveo is the most international car I’ve ever come across – it was designed in Italy, based on a model originally from South Korea (Daewoo Kalos), and currently manufactured by an American company. The Aveo has a piece of North America, Asia, and Europe. It’s available in 120 countries – I saw plenty of them when I was in Singapore.

The Aveo is a subcompact vehicle. That means it’s easy to park and move around. It’s a bit smaller than other subcompacts like the Toyota Yaris or Honda Fit, but larger than a Smart car.

Check this out if you’re in the market for a low-priced, small, basic vehicle.

EXPERT REVIEW:
Sam Moses via NewCar Test Drive:
“The Chevrolet Aveo offers affordable transportation in a choice of four-door sedan or five-door hatchback. [The] Aveo challenges the Toyota Echo, Scion xA, Kia Rio, and Hyundai Accent for the base rung of the transportation ladder. Aveo is based on the Daewoo Kalo, a Korean car that's popular in many countries around the world.

The base models are basic, but the interiors are quite nice. The front seats are comfortable and the back seats are surprisingly roomy. The Aveo looks good, and the body panels fit well. Both models get zippy performance from a twin-cam four-cylinder engine built by GM. Sharp steering makes the Aveo fun to drive, while its decent ride and reasonably quiet cabin make for pleasant transportation.”
“The Chevrolet Aveo body was created, believe it or not, in Giorgetto Giugiaro's Italdesign studio in Turin, Italy. And the Italian influence shows, especially in the smooth sedan, which is better looking than the Hyundai Accent or Kia Rio. The sedan and five-door hatchback ride on the same relatively generous 97.6-inch wheelbase”

“The nose is nice: simple and clean with tidy shapes. The headlights are horizontal and nicely rounded at the corners, underlined in amber by long, thin turn signals. The grille smiles at you with its bright crossbar and Chevy bowtie set against inconspicuous black mesh. Both front and rear bumpers are body colored and integrate well with the shape of the car.”

EARTHY CAR OF THE WEEK: 2003 VW New Beetle Convertible

2003 Volkswagen New Beetle, Convertible, Silver, 93619 mi, $9,900, http://bit.ly/lpxfLO Compact, 5-spd manual, MPG = 21/28

This 2003 VW New Beetle is one of the two convertibles on our lot currently. Convertibles = the perfect summer car.

The 2003 model is a part of the 1st generation of the New Beetle. The New Beetle is a modern version of the classic Beetle – modern engineering and features with retro styling. 2003 was the first year there was a convertible version of the Beetle.

Consider this, if you want to go out in retro styling, with fresh air comfort.

--Isa R Bufano, social media manager of Earthy Cars

OVERVIEW:
Via AOL Autos:
“When it arrived in 1998, Volkswagen's New Beetle rekindled the magic of its legendary namesake and became a ray of sunshine in an all-too-serious car market. At that time, we asked: Where's the convertible? We've been asking that question every year since. Finally, it's here.

The question now becomes: Did they wait too long? Volkswagen's New Beetle is no longer that new, having been around for about six years now. With the Chrysler PT Cruiser, Ford Thunderbird, Mini Cooper and other retrospective designs stealing headlines, the Beetle no longer basks in the retro-fad limelight.

Beetle remains a stylish car, however. And because it's a Volkswagen, the Beetle is a refined car. It combines German engineering and performance with exceptional fit and finish, and it represents a good value. Like other retro-mobiles, however, driver and passengers must make some concessions for style. Interior ergonomics are not as good those in a more traditional car, such as the Golf. Nor is there a lot of trunk space.

Drop the top and all these concerns are blown away, of course. The New Beetle convertible is good fun. It's also tight. Volkswagen has engineered a winning chassis with none of the cowl shake common on most convertibles. New for 2003, Beetle convertibles are offered with 2.0-liter or 1.8-liter turbo engines.

[The standard Beetle] comes in an assortment of bright, fun colors. Its exterior and interior design details are fun and creative. On the road, the Beetle is smooth and sophisticated and handles well. It's considered a safe car. Beetle earned top scores in the federal governments crash tests and comes with Volkswagen's excellent safety features. Just don't expect to see people looking, smiling and waving at you every time you come around a corner as much as they did when the New Beetle first hit the streets. After all, Beetle is now a familiar face in America.”

EARTHY CAR OF THE WEEK: 2010 Blue Toyota Prius

2010 Toyota Prius, Hatchback, Blue, 25217 mi, $24,900 http://ht.ly/54yey Mid-size, MPG = 51/48

This Toyota Prius is the newest vehicle on our lot – tied with this one.
It is the only 3rd generation Prius on our lot, out of the six Prius’s currently on our lot.

For those of you who don’t know, the Prius is a hybrid electric vehicle. It runs on a combination of gasoline and electric power. Ever since the disaster in Japan, Toyota Prius’s have been in short supply. We are one of the few dealerships in the area to carry a decent supply of Prius’s. Ours are the lowest priced.

It is the most fuel efficient vehicle on our lot – it can get up to 51 miles per gallon of gas, average 50! The 3rd generation Prius is close to being the most fuel efficient vehicle available in America. By far, it is the most fuel efficient electric hybrid vehicle (for info, see here, here, and here).

With rising gas prices, depleting oil resources and over-reliance on foreign oil, it is wise to get a fuel efficient vehicle if you want to save money and protect the environment. It’s best to get one that is a hybrid/electric vehicle. This is the best one out there.

OVERVIEW:
Vehix.com:
The new 2010 Toyota Prius is offered in five levels of equipment, denoted by Roman numerals. The least expensive model is the Prius I, but it’s well equipped with 15-inch alloy wheels, power side mirrors, power windows, power door locks with remote keyless entry, a tilt/telescopic steering wheel, air conditioning, push-button ignition, a height-adjustable driver’s seat, and a CD player with an auxiliary audio input jack. The Prius I includes three different driving modes: Normal, Eco and Power.

“Toyota installs a comprehensive safety package in every Prius. Seven airbags, including a driver knee airbag, are on board to protect occupants in the event of a collision. Plus, the Toyota Star Safety System – ABS with electronic brake-force distribution, traction control, and stability control – is standard.”
MSN Autos:
“The 2010 Toyota Prius debuts the third-generation of the exclusive hybrid model with a more powerful 98-horsepower 1.8-liter Atkinson-cycle engine. Combined with the electric motor hybrid system, total output is 134 horsepower, a 24 horsepower improvement over the previous generation. Fuel economy is improved to an EPA estimated 51/48 city/hwy mpg and a combined 50 mpg. An electric water pump and a new exhaust gas recirculation system add to the engine’s efficiency. A multi-information display panel that monitors fuel and energy consumption is standard with three different displays to provide information to the driver. The Hybrid Synergy Drive system is 90 percent new with a lighter transaxle, new inverter, 20 percent weight reduction and a new electronically-controlled regenerative braking system. Three driving modes are EV Mode on battery power alone at low speed, Power Mode with increased throttle response and Eco Mode for best fuel efficiency.”

AOL Autos:
“The Toyota Prius is completely redesigned for 2010, with fresh exterior and interior styling, more cabin room, and upgraded standard and optional equipment. A larger 1.8-liter engine with three selectable drive modes debuts, providing more power without compromising fuel efficiency, while safety is enhanced with a new driver's knee airbag and standard vehicle stability control for all trim levels.”

EARTHY CAR OF THE WEEK: 2001 Ford Mustang GT

2001 Ford Mustang GT Convertible, Coupe, Yellow, 70848 mi, $10,900 http://bit.ly/muX8ye Compact pony car, 4-spd automatic, MPG = 16/23

This Mustang GT is an untypical Earthy Car. It’s a sports car. It’s a convertible. It’s all-American (made in America, and a symbol of American culture). It’s not as fuel efficient as the vehicles we usually have, but it’s bigger and much more powerful (its power comes from a 4.6 liter, V8 cylinder engine, with horsepower of 260hp @ 5,250RPM). You can hear it when you rev up the engine.

The Mustang has existed since 1964. It created the car category known as the ‘pony car’ – a sporty, compact 2-door car with a long hood and a short deck. The 2001 Mustang is a part of the 4th generation of Mustang’s.

Summer is here. The Mustang’s convertible top and sporty look make this is the perfect summer car.

OVERVIEW:
AOL Autos:
“The Ford Mustang has remained true to the traits that made an instant classic of the 1964-1/2 original, even as it is entering the third year of its fifth generation. It's still relatively big for a sporty car, with plenty of available options, and small-block V8 power.

With the latter, there's plenty of torque. The engine sounds great at full song, urging you to keep your foot in it, yet it burbles along when cruising, attracting lots of attention from those around you.Excellent handling response keeps you involved.

But no matter the model, the Mustang boasts distinctive styling. It won't be mistaken for anything else.It makes a statement. The Mustang has only two true competitors, the Chevrolet Camaro and the Pontiac Firebird. There are imported coupes that compete with the Mustang on price, but they don't offer the same V8 pony car experience.”
MSN Autos:
“The original Mustang, which debuted in 1964, was not only one of the most successful new car introductions in automotive history, but it also created a market segment known as the "pony car," noteworthy for compact dimensions, a long-hood/short-deck profile and spirited performance. As the years have passed, most of the Mustang's competitors have disappeared or evolved to compete in other market segments. The Mustang itself has undergone many changes in design and market focus over the years—today's version marks a return to the car's performance and styling roots.”

EARTHY CAR OF THE WEEK: 2004 Red Honda Civic Coupe

2004 Honda Civic EX, Coupe, Red, 84086 mi, $9,900 http://bit.ly/mnqwer Compact, 4-spd automatic, MPG = 25/34

This Civic is one of the three Honda Civic’s on our lot. Like the majority of our vehicles, the Civic’s are practical, affordable, compact, and fuel-efficient.

However, this particular Civic is special. It is one of the few compact cars on our lot that has a power sunroof. It is the only vehicle here that has a spoiler on it. It is one of the five coupes on our lot. It is bright red in color.

The look of this Civic is geared towards younger drivers. Add this to its affordable price, and it’s ideal for a college student looking for a car, or as a high school student’s first vehicle. College students, high school students, parents of high school students - consider.

EX models bring a responsive engine to the party and the Si hatchback is a hoot. All of them feature Honda's durability and reliability. How right they were. Fully 64 percent of today's buyers of the Civic coupe alone are women. Sixty-six percent are single, and the median age of 34 makes them "one of the youngest" buyer groups in the auto industry, said Honda spokesman Andy Boyd.”

EARTHY CAR OF THE WEEK: 2003 Blue Toyota Echo

2003 Toyota Echo, Sedan, Blue, 51620 mi, $7,900 http://bit.ly/lxFLz5 Subcompact, 4-spd automatic, MPG = 28/36

The Toyota “Echo” was an alternate name for the first generation Toyota Yaris.

This Toyota Echo is double ideal for those who are looking for a vehicle that will save money. Why?

First, it is priced at just $7,900 – one on the lowest priced vehicles on our lot right now. And it only has 51, 620 miles on it, low for a 2003 vehicle.

Second, the Echo/Yaris model is one of the most fuel efficient fuel powered vehicles that has been on the market in recent years. This Echo can get up to 36 miles to the gallon. With rising gas prices, driving around this vehicle would save someone a lot in gas money.

It has a 4 cylinder engine with 108 horsepower, lots of power for a subcompact car. The interior is roomier compared to other subcompact vehicles, and there are several clever storage spaces. The design of the Echo is a bit funky and holds appeal to the young crowd. And of course, as a subcompact, it is easy to park.

So if you’re looking for a tiny, affordable, fuel-efficient, and/or funky car, look no further than this Echo.

New Car Test Drive via AOL Autos: http://autos.aol.com/cars-Toyota-Echo-2003/expert-review/
“The funky-looking little Echo is the least expensive way to drive a new Toyota. You won't wow your friends with this one, but it will give you Toyota's quality, durability and reliability starting at less than $10,000.

The Toyota Echo comes with a spunky four-cylinder engine that can achieve over 30 mpg around town. You get front-wheel drive, a nicely tuned suspension that delivers the ride of a much larger vehicle, and Toyota's anti-vibration tricks that make the car amazingly smooth at highway speeds.”

“[The Echo] wasn't designed for looks. It was designed for comfort, convenience, safety and affordability. So it's tall. Way tall. Unheard of tall for a subcompact. Like, taller than a Cadillac, which is much, much longer.

With one swift, upward stroke, Toyota designers have erased the biggest factor against owning a small car: that feeling that other vehicles could squash you like a bug. In the Echo, it no longer feels like everyone is bigger and faster than you.
You might also be passing them, propelled by your smooth, energetic, high-tech, 108-horsepower, politically correct LEV (Low-Emissions Vehicle) engine.”

“You might also congratulate yourself on your own minimalist efficiency each time you climb inside, which, with Echo's low floor and high roof, is easy. There's not one gauge or button or knob or display more or less than is needed. The instrument binnacle is strikingly clean and simple, with a speedometer having handsome black-on-white lettering reminiscent of a Lexus, glowing bluish at night. Seven little round black dots, warning lights, are bunched so they look sort of like a domino on the dash. The digital clock is easy to read. There's no tachometer (that's a frill) but there is a rev limiter (which is not).” “Possibly the most astonishing characteristic of the Echo is that you might find yourself going way fast without knowing it. On a curvy two-lane stretch where we carefully respect the law by driving no faster than 60 even in the straight sections, we glanced over (not down) at the speedometer and were startled to see 72 mph. Not once, but twice.

Another outstanding feature that contributes to this subcompact phenomenon is the super ride quality. MacPherson struts and coil springs in front, with torsion beams in back, allows the 2020-pound Echo to glide over bumps. Against a pothole your teeth can get rattled as in almost any other car, but the Echo feels tough, and takes the hit like a bantamweight boxer standing up to a jab.”

“Even with all its highway strengths, it's hard to imagine a better city car than the Echo… Because the competition is solid, Toyota might not have fired a shot that echoes 'round the world, but it's a great little blast.”

EARTHY CAR OF THE WEEK: 2006 VW Jetta 2.5, Blue

2006 Volkswagen Jetta 2.5, Sedan, Blue, 89364 mi, $10,900 http://bit.ly/mzugKp Compact, 6-spd automatic, MPG = 19/28

The Volkswagen Jetta sedan is perfect for car for families with parents and two or three kids. It’s a compact car, so it’s not too big, but the Jetta is larger than other compact sedans (Corolla, Civic, Sentra, etc.). Your family will be comfortable inside it, but it won’t take up a lot of room either.

Priced at less than 11K, the Jetta is also ideal for a single person looking for an affordable car.

The Jetta is the 2nd smallest Volkswagen brand sold in the United States (behind the Rabbit). Like most compact sedans, the Jetta has an excellent reputation. The 2006 Jetta is the first 5th generation Jetta Jetta model.

“A 2.5-liter five-cylinder engine powers the standard models and it's pleasantly robust, with a broad power curve and a raspy sound. The 2.5-liter engine gets an EPA-rated 22 miles per gallon City, 30 mpg Highway, whether equipped with the five-speed manual gearbox or the new six-speed Tiptronic automatic…Regardless of engine, we found the new Jetta responsive around town and comfortable on long trips. Volkswagens are known for handling, and the new Jetta carves through corners with precision…

The new Jetta is larger than previous models, and it features a more spacious interior stuffed with convenience and lavished with Volkswagen's legendary attention to detail. Even the least-expensive model offers an elegant, high-quality cabin. Its driver enjoys excellent visibility and ease of use with logical controls and instruments. Build quality is superb inside and out. All in all, the new Jetta is a solid car.”

“The all-new Volkswagen Jetta is a delectable dish of European-bred automotive technology, superior materials and tangibly good build quality. This new Jetta is both a comfortable long-range cruiser and a snappy runabout. Choosing to address the American driver's thirst for torque was one of the more pleasing ways that Volkswagen fashioned the standard 2.5-liter models for the stop-and-go derby of urban driving, but it's still how well the Jetta conquers the open road that makes the Volkswagen driving experience distinctive and enjoyable.”

EARTHY CAR OF THE WEEK: 2009 Blue Kia Spectra

2009 Kia Spectra EX, Sedan, Black, 23703 mi, $11,900 http://bit.ly/lgHPx8 Compact, 4-spd automatic, MPG = 24/32

MSN Autos, AOL Autos, Yahoo! Autos, & Vehix.com.

Kia is one of the two major brands from South Korea with vehicles in the United States. The Spectra model (was) Kia’s primary compact car.

This Kia Spectra is just two years old, and has only 23,703 miles on it. Its previous owner also maintained it well. There is barely a scratch on it, and it runs smoothly.

Priced at $12,900, this Kia is low-priced for a two year old vehicle.

Like the Corolla (which we have plenty of), Civic, or Sentra, the Kia Spectra is a compact, economical car that is affordable. Like those model, the Spectra has an excellent reputation – read the reviews linked below.

The Kia Spectra is perfect for small families, or young singles looking for a basic, but good quality car.

EXPERT REVIEWS:
NewCarTest Drive via AOL Autos: http://autos.aol.com/cars-Kia-Spectra-2009-EX__4dr_Sedan/expert-review/
”The Kia Spectra is a good choice among a field of compact cars that offer few, if any, bad choices. The Spectra compact sedan offer excellent fuel economy along with Kia's strong warranty, which make for a compelling package for budget-minded buyers. It represents one of the best values among compacts, with an impressive list of safety equipment for its modest price."
“Inside is a modern cabin that's roomy and pleasant with quality materials and good fit and finish. Everything is easy to operate.
Safety features are plentiful: The Spectra comes with a full complement of airbag supplemental restraints. In addition to the mandatory dual frontal airbags, the Spectra's front-seat occupants are protected by seat-mounted side-impact airbags; while full-coverage side curtain airbags protect both front- and rear-seat occupants."
“The Kia Spectra makes a styling statement, not a busy, fussy one, but one that's clean, with sculpted character lines and interesting surface planes that set the Spectra apart from the look-alike, safely conservative econo-box class.”
“The Kia Spectra offers respectable performance from its 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine. It's a modern engine with continuously variable valve timing, and its power output is strong for the class.”
“The Kia Spectra is a good quality compact with very good fit and finish. Styling is sharp and distinctive. Power and economy mesh well. Comfort and convenience are fully featured. We could drive one of these every day and be happy.”

EARTHY CAR OF THE WEEK: 2004 Nissan Sentra 1.8 ULEV

2004 Nissan Sentra 1.8 ULEV, Silver, Sedan, 69603 mi, $7,900 http://ht.ly/3Z26H Compact, 5-spd manual, MPG = 24/32

We don’t have Nissan’s on our lot that often, but this Nissan Sentra is economical, practical, compact, and fuel-efficient, like most of our vehicles.
Our Sentra is seven years old, yet it has less than 70,000 miles on it. That’s low for a seven year old car.

This particular Sentra is a ULEV (ultra-low emissions vehicle), meaning it emits less pollution than a typical vehicle. You will be doing your part to save the environment.

The 2004 Sentra is quite stylish and roomier than a typical economy car (see review below).

It is priced at just $7,900, an affordable price and a great value for what you get.

EXPERT REVIEWS:
NewCarTestDrive via AOL Autos: http://autos.aol.com/cars-Nissan-Sentra-2004-1.8__4dr_Sedan/expert-review/
“Nissan Sentra gets updated styling and an upgraded interior for 2004. The changes give the Sentra a more contemporary appearance with a toothy grille reminiscent of the 2004 Maxima…The basic product and its mission have not changed, however. The Sentra remains practical and frugal, roomy and comfortable.”

Exterior: “Sentra features restyled headlamps and rear combination lamps, a new smooth front and rear fascia with a fresh hood design and a distinctive grille. The changes are designed to take the styling of the Sentra to a new level with more flair, making it look more stylish, assertive, and self-confident...Sentra maintains its flush-mounted, one-piece multi-parabola halogen headlamps as well as its body-color front grille, side moldings and bumpers. Handsome and solid, the basic Sentra design features a low hood line, high rear deck, and strong rear fenders, with a distinct front-to-rear character line.”

Interior: “Sentra offers a roomy interior, both for people and cargo. The interior is designed well from a functionality standpoint and everything seems to fit well. ..At first glance the Sentra's front seats look like normal economy car perches, but once you're in them they feel much roomier than they look. The driver's seat is eight-way adjustable (four-way on the base 1.8 model), with a four-way adjustable passenger seat. Driver and passenger sit relatively high in the hip area, making getting in and out easier.”

Driving: “Sentra 1.8 and 1.8 S models run smoothly and quietly. They feel stable at high speeds, and wind and tire noise are low. The 1.8-liter engine turns a relatively calm 4500 rpm at 100 mph. At the legal limit of 70 mph, the 1.8-liter engine turns just 3100 rpm in fifth gear when equipped with the five-speed manual…For longer life with less maintenance, the Sentra engine uses a timing chain instead of a cheaper timing belt.”
